Dr. Brian Groat originally served in the United States Air Force. Deciding to embark on a medical career, he attended medical school at the Tulane University School of Medicine. He then served an internship at the Charity Hospital System in New Orleans. After serving another tour of duty with the Air Force, during which he flew search and rescue missions, he finished his residency in ophthalmology at the Storm Eye Institute of the Medical University of South Carolina.
Dr. Groat then reentered the Air Force and served at the Mike O’Callaghan Federal Medical Center in Las Vegas, where he became the Chief of Ophthalmology. Over the next four years, Dr. Groat performed thousands of laser and intraocular surgeries. In 2011, the Air Force asked him to be the head of ocular trauma at Bagram AB, Afghanistan. He earned a NATO medal for his achievements there.
Dr. Darrell Hester earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina’s Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He then completed a residency at the UNC Department of Ophthalmology, where he was the first resident to perform no-stitch cataract surgery. Like Dr. Groat, Dr. Hester served in the Air Force. He became the Chief of Ophthalmology at the Keesler Medical Center in Biloxi, Mississippi. He has also earned board certification from the American Board of Ophthalmology and has earned a fellowship from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
